Content:Acute stress has been reported to impair the retrieval process in different tasks such as Morris maze or active avoidance, but those effects have not been tested in retrieval or extinction Barnes spatial task yet. In order to test the acute stress effect on retrieval and extinction processes, forty seven Wistar rats were trained in a Barnes spatial task and given either zero (control group), one or four hours of acute restraint stress before the retrieval and extinction. Results show that animals from both one and four hour stress groups had a better performance in retrieval, compared with the control group. Finally, a faster extinction process is suggested in the four hour stress group compared to the other groups.

Keywords: Spatial learning, acute stress, recovery, extinction, restraint.
